Unable to Open Attachments in Outlook Express

If you are unable to open an attachment, first make sure that you have the proper application for viewing the file installed on your computer. For example, if the file has an .xls extension, you must have Microsoft Excel installed to be able to open the file.

If Outlook Express displays a message saying "OE removed access to the following unsafe attachments in your mail", your Oulook Express is set to prevent access to all attachments. This is the default setting and it can be disabled as follows:

  1. In Outlook Express, click on the "Tools" menu and select "Options"
  2. Click on the "Security" tab
  3. Uncheck "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus."
  4. Click OK

Make sure that you have an anti-virus program installed and updated before disabling this security feature.
